My mood board


I am doing an entertainment magazine, this requires one front cover and two contents pages of the first two editions of a new entertainment magazine that is being launched by Hearst Magazines UK and the working website for the magazine.

Minimum requirements:
  • Statement of Intent (approx. 500 words)1 
  • Entertainment magazine covers and contents pages: two or three pages for each of the first two editions (based on choice of single or double page spread). 
  • Magazine distribution method: Content must be suitable for retail distribution. 
  • Number of web pages: One homepage and one linked page. 
  • Cross-media production target audience: a fun-loving 16–25 year old mass market demographic.
My survey results fit in with the chosen target audience as they showed that my main audience was females aged16-17 therefore this matches the brief.

In this task i will find different fonts, colours and images for my entertainment magazine, i will be looking at colour representations and other connotations that will change the overall view of my product and how the audience will consume it. By doing this mood board i will be finding new and creative ways to present my work for my magazine.

In my mood board i looked at the colour representations and decided that i want to use red as it symbolises love and desire, pink as it shows femininity which links to my mainly female audience and also has connotations of love, black, grey and white because these monochrome colours will make the shades of red stand out and be prominent. My mood boards also helped me gain an understanding of what typography, colours scheme and camera shots i would like to use. In my productions i would use high key lighting, either red, pink, grey or white background (I will have to try different colours to see how each model looks and what message i want to portray) and if i was to use props i would use props with romantic connotations such as flowers. For intertextuality i could use a font that is used in the title of the romance film i am looking at or i could refer to other films the actors have been in.  I will use Butler's theory because the front cover will have a powerful woman as women aren't usually presented in this way.

    S - These ides for designs are very good
    I - You need to include mood boards with information on type of fonts you're going to use, general colour scheme, etc.
    T - Write the above information as part of a conclusion using RED FONT.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when a media text has references to another media text either as a parody or a homage. Institutions use intertextuality to make the audience feel rewarded when they make the link and understand the reference between the two texts. I am looking into this to find out if entertainment magazines use intertextuality and if so how they do it and if its for comedy or other reasons. In this magazine Steve Carell is dressed in a suit and the headline is talking about his role in the office. the intertextuality used in this front cover is the reference to Evan Almighty because in the film he cut himself shaving. the institution done this because he is known for his comedy, this parody shows reference to some of his biggest work because Evan Almighty is a very famous film, this makes the reader feel like they know him from somewhere and feel rewarded when they realise with a small hint of the cut on his face where he is from. Media Language and Representation

I am completing this post to gain a wider understanding of how magazines use media elements and how they create meaning and construct representations that appeal to their audience. I want to find out how the layout, typography, use of language and the use of images all work together to create an enticing front cover. LAYOUT- The layout of Entertainment Weekly's magazine cover has the Masthead in the same place as all the other magazines sold by the same institution. They have the main image of Mary Poppins covering the masthead slightly which they do in a lot of their previous magazines, this makes it recognisable for the reader as its a well known masthead.
