statement of intent
My intentions are to create two front cover pages and two content pages to an entertainment magazine called 'Outtake'. My magazine will be produced by Hearst Magazines UK and I will also design and make a website to promote the product. In order to meet the requirements of my chosen brief i will use representation, language, industries and audiences to the full of my ability to be able to get the most out of my coursework, these will help my work gain meaning attracting a wider audience. For one of the editions i will have a female actress and a male actor on the front cover as the main image, the woman will be looking into the camera with a stern facial expression and the male will have his head down and looking at the floor, she will look possessive by having her hand on his shoulder to make her seem like she owns him, this representation will make the female subject look powerful and important and the male look weak and vulnerable, this links to the film name "He's mine". The shot will be a head and shoulders shot because they are conventions of an entertainment magazine and it will also get in the most important part of the photo where her hand is holding his shoulder and their facial expressions. This will appeal to my audience as the film will be in the romantic comedy genre which is what my target audience wanted to see in my magazine, this genre appeals to women aged 16-26 which is what my questionnaire showed. I chose to have an empowering woman and a weak man on the front cover because it goes against social norms, this links to Van Zoonen's radical feminism, this is when females are represented as higher up in the patriarchy as men which is extreme feminism and makes women look more powerful. Using his theory will attracted more audiences because people will it as abnormal and will shock a lot of people which is attracting more attention than other magazines with stereotypical male and female couples on them. I also used two people of completely different ethnic backgrounds linking to Strauss' binary opposites which shows diversity appealing to a wider audience. In the second front cover of OUTTAKE the main image will be of a man and woman using intertextuality to refer to the famous pretty woman pose where Julia Roberts is leaning against Richard Gere holding his tie over his shoulder like he is on a lead. I wanted to refer to this particular image due to the high exposure meaning my audience will be more likely to make the link between the film and my magazine cover. I think the use of the empowering woman once again entices a young female audience due to feminism being a largely spoken about topic. The model I used challenges the stereotypical norms of females due to her emo/ gothic look, wearing all black connotes she has a darker sense of humour and is all in all a complete binary opposite, using Strauss' theory again, to the male model in the image because he is wearing a white shirt and has lighter features, this implies there is a binary opposite of black and white or light and dark which could be foreshadowing events that occur in the film, this will attract my audience because of the uncertainty and them wanting to find out what will happen. These meet the requirements of my chosen brief because I have focuses on using representation, language, industries and audimeces through my media work produced.
I intend to link my chosen media brief of creating an entertainment magazine to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of the production will be through the creation of a website with interactive links to the chosen product of the brief. Due to there being two front covers and two contents pages of my product I will ensure that the digital convergence will continue to remain suitable for the target audience through the layout of the website in regards to logo and image placement for product enhancement. I want to explore the use of colour to enable me to make intertextual links to other films or shows in both editions of the product and through my digital site.
